ADD/ADHD Counseling
We all know kids who can’t sit still, who never seem to listen, who blurt out inappropriate comments, or don’t follow instructions no matter how clearly you present them. Those same kids often develop into adults who struggle with task completion, difficulties with work and homelife responsibilities, stress, frustration, anger, irritability, and other comorbities i.e., depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.
Adults with ADHD may:
Inattention Symptoms:
Frequently distractible or has a wandering mind
Difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or conversations
Often makes careless mistakes due to overlooking details
Frequently loses items like keys, phone, or paperwork
Struggles with organization and time management
Avoids or procrastinates tasks that require sustained mental effort
Often forgets appointments, deadlines, or daily responsibilities
Hyperactivity/Impulsivity Symptoms:
Restlessness; often feels "on the go" or driven by a motor
Difficulty sitting still or relaxing quietly
Talks excessively or interrupts others
Tends to act or speak without thinking
Difficulty waiting in lines or for one's turn
Frequently changes jobs, hobbies, or interests impulsively
Makes impulsive decisions, such as spending money recklessly
Children with ADHD may:
- Have trouble staying focused or get easily distracted
- Appear not to be listening when spoken to
- Constantly fidget and squirm
- Talk excessively
- Act without thinking
- Interrupt often, or say the wrong thing at the wrong time
- Have a quick temper or “short fuse”
Whether or not you or your child’s symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity are due to ADHD, they can cause problems if left untreated. Children who can’t focus or control themselves or get into trouble at school often find it hard to make friends. These frustrations can later lead to low self-esteem as well as friction for the whole family.
Treatment can make a dramatic difference in you and your child’s symptoms. With the right support, you and your child can get on track for success in all areas of life.
